Alex HamiltonMEMBERS of Wrexham Supporters' Trust have met Alex Hamilton, the owner of the town's football club, to try to buy his 78% shareholding.

The group had a meeting with the controversial former chairman on Monday.

"We met for almost two hours and presented him with our offer," said trust vice-chair Rob Griffiths.

They want to work with partners to acquire the club and its Racecourse ground.

Mr Griffiths said he believed their proposal would "safeguard the future of the football club."

"Mr Hamilton has agreed to give our proposals his full consideration and we will talk again in a few days time.

"We agreed that the current situation at the club is very serious but the trust remains optimistic that we can reach an agreement to safeguard the future of the club and the ground," he added.

Mr Hamilton, who met three supporters' trust representatives , said: "I'm getting professional advice as to the valuation of my interests in Wrexham football club."

He added that he hoped to do a deal in the interests of his family, the football club and the Wrexham public.

Nearly 6,000 fans flocked through the turnstiles on Saturday in support of the club and its players, who had not been paid.

However, many told the BBC Wales News website that they feared the 2-2 draw against Hull City would be the last game at the Racecourse.

Tony Burgess, who goes to home matches with his eight year old daughter Megan, said: "The Racecourse is everything to us and it's become part of our life, you just don't know what's happening."

The past week has been a difficult one for the club.

Mr Hamilton resigned as chairman last Friday, but he is said to be reconsidering his position.

He still owns the ground and has a 78% per cent share in the club.

His resignation came after the club's bank account was frozen and Scottish Power-Manweb temporarily turned off the electricity because of unpaid bills.

The club's debts are believed to be up to £5m including an unpaid tax bill rumoured to be around £800,000.

Wrexham Council has said it wants to buy the Racecourse Ground to safeguard its location.
