Stars join fight to save the Reds

Stan BoardmanA COMEDIAN, a snooker player and a businessman have joined forces to organise a series of celebrity fundraising events to help Wrexham Football Club.

After last night’s game against Stockport, Stan Boardman, Dennis Taylor and Neville Dickens announced plans for a fundraising campaign to save the club and The Racecourse.

The plan is the brainchild of Liverpool funnyman Stan, whose son, Paul, who works for Sky Sports, told him something needed to be done to help the beleaguered club.

Stan decided to put his celebrity contacts and quickfire comedy to good use with a series of events, likely to kick off with a celebrity football match at The Racecourse.

First to sign up for the enterprise were Stan´s friends, former snooker world champion Dennis Taylor and businessman Neville Dickens, of the Dickens Group of Companies.

Mr Dickens said: “Paul used to be on the ground staff at Wrexham when he was younger, and rang his dad to say something needed to be done to help Wrexham out. Stan has been to some of the big games at Wrexham and understands the club is steeped in history and tradition. He would hate to see it go and came up with the idea to put on a show to help with the fundraising.

“Dennis Taylor has just come to live in the area and he said he would help in any way he could. We are all friends, and Dennis said ‘count me in straight away’. I think the first event will be a celebrity football match with a dinner after. It will be a good event for Wrexham and will help the club.

“I introduced Dennis and Stan to Dave Bennett and Dave Griffiths last night, and they were delighted. We now have to get the ball rolling and take it from there. Stan has contacts in the celebrity world and he will be able to bring in some stars.

“It will take a little time to set something like this up, but I think it will be something that will be ongoing until a time when there is light at the end of the tunnel.

“It just goes to show what it means to people outside of Wrexham that the club is here, they’re interested in this club and want to help.”

Over the coming weeks, Stan plans to reach out to his celebrity contacts and son Paul also plans to be a part of the events.

An announcement of the first event is expected in the New Year.
