Council will fight for historic ground

08/12/04

Neil ROgersCOUNCIL chiefs will continue to fight to save The Racecourse ground, despite Wrexham FC going into administration on Friday.

The council want to buy the freehold of The Racecourse and will continue to do so despite heavy speculation that club owner, Alex Hamilton, has found a alternative buyer.

A statement from the authority said: "We have been aware of the difficulties faced by Wrexham FC for several months and we are very disappointed that they have been placed in administration.

"Wrexham Council's position remains the same, The Racecourse stadium is an important regional, economic and community facility and we will do what we can to safeguard its future and the public investment that has already been made.

"It is not within our powers or appropriate for the council to intervene in the financial affairs of the football club.

Success

"We will be supportive of any proposals to ensure the club continues to play football at The Racecourse."

Meanwhile, Wrexham-born Liberal-Democrat AM for North Wales, Eleanor Burnham, said the administration order is "short-term pain for long-term".

The AM said the decision to go in to administration and lose 10 league points could be the key to the long-term success of the club.

Mrs Burnham said: "No-one wants the club to have to drop 10 points, but now they can take a proper look in to the background to the whole situation at the club.

"The court's decision gives Wrexham a chance to look at what has gone on in the running of the club and particularly the alleged dispersal of some of its assets. I'm sure all these matters can be resolved and there will be a bright future for the club, both on and off the field."
