Wrexham Evening Leader

Final offer in Trust's bid to buy The Racecourse

8/11/04

Wrexham Supporters' TrustWREXHAM Supporters' Trust will make a second and final offer to owner Alex Hamilton to buy the club and The Racecourse ground.

The move comes as the Evening Leader prepares to present Welsh Assembly Sports Minister Alun Pugh in Cardiff with our 5,132 name petition calling on them to help Wrexham Council buy The Racecourse ground.

The group met last night and agreed to make an improved offer to the controversial former chairman of the debt-ridden club.

Mr Hamilton turned down the trust's initial offer, but yesterday the trust indicated that a second offer was under consideration.

And this morning, board member Bruce Clapton confirmed a second offer would be made as the trust continues its effort to safeguard the future of the club.

He was reluctant to say how much the trust had offered, although Mr Hamilton indicated over the weekend that it was in the region of £2 million.

Mr Clapton said: "We agreed to make an second offer. It will be an improved offer, that's all I can say. We have not been able to contact Mr Hamilton yet. It will also be our final offer."

He added: "That two main things we talked about was the improved second offer and the public meeting we have arranged for Thursday.

"The meeting will be an update on what the trust has been doing over the last few weeks and also about a major fund-raising drive we will be launching. We need to fund-raise to keep up the trust's work and pay for fees and charges.

"We also want to talk about the forthcoming Bristol City game and how we can help get more people through the turnstiles. It's the only home game we have this month and it's vital we have a good crowd"

The public meeting will be held at NEWI's William Aston Hall on Thursday at 7.30pm.

When Mr Hamilton rejected the initial offer he revealed that former chairman Mark Guterman has also made a bid for the club, a claim Mr Guterman later confirmed.

Sources told the Evening Leader Mr Guterman was at council offices in Wrexham yesterday to meet high ranking council officers.

A council spokesman said the authority could make no comment on that claim but added that the authority was continuing negotiations to secure the freehold of The Racecourse ground.
