Bill WingroveA former commercial director of Wrexham Football Club has been arrested by detectives investigating the alleged theft of gate money.

Bill Wingrove, 60, who is now the chief executive at Shrewsbury Town, has been released on police bail.

Detectives are looking into claims of theft from Wrexham's home game against Swindon Town in March.

The former commercial director, who lives near Stoke-on-Trent, said he went voluntarily to Newcastle-under-Lyme police station on Sunday to help detectives with their inquiries.

He added that he welcomes the police inquiry, which he has said is being widened as a result of what he told them.

Mr Wingrove, who is due to speak to police again in January, said that rumours had been circulating about missing gate cash for some time and he had been pleased to answer questions about allegations of theft, which he said amounted to less than £10,000.

He joined League Two club Shrewsbury Town in August.
