'This is not acceptable'

Denis SmithDENIS SMITH today revealed why he blew his top with his players in what could have been Wrexham's last ever League game last night.

"I very rarely lose my temper after the game with the players but today I have done because I think they have let me down, the club down and it might be the last league game this club plays and to perform like that to say it's disappointing is an understatement," said a seething Smith.

"We have got a cup game on Saturday and then we are in the court on Wednesday. If the court closes us down I would take it that's going to be the last league game."

The Reds' manager's rant after the 2-1 defeat at Blackpool came at a time when the club is plagued by financial troubles with the club - the oldest in Wales -facing a winding up order from the inland revenue a week today.

An Andy Holt goal gave Wrexham a deserved lead at the break but the Reds threw it away after the break.

Smith was even more disappointed with the manner of last night's defeat and performance than Saturday's 5-1 hammering at League One leaders Luton Town.

Smith said: "Saturday I can live with - I can't live with that. I have got to be honest, it takes some doing to lose that game. I wouldn't say they won it, I'd say we lost it. It was ridiculous, impossible for us to lose."

Asked about what he thought Wrexham's chances of surviving, Smith said: "I've no idea. The only person who can answer that is Mr Hamilton and I've not spoken to him for three weeks."

But the club's off-the-field problems, including late payment of wages to players, were put to one-side by Smith for the time being when he voiced his disapproval at the way his side had squandered a first half lead and lost control of the game.

Smith said: "I want to talk about what's happened tonight. That to me is important. This has upset me tonight, I do not expect my team to play like that. It was unacceptable."

With administration now a serious threat for the cash-strapped Reds, Smith could see his side docked 10 points. That would put them second from bottom in League One.

Smith said: "We'll have to wait and see where we finish. If we get ten points knocked off then it makes life a lot more difficult.

"If we play like we did last night we will be. If we play like we normally do then we won't have a problem, we'll still get out of it.

"What I will be doing is going down expecting to win at Hayes because I expect to win every game. If we play like the way we can do, we will."

Smith blamed missed first half chances and bad defending after the break for Wrexham's downfall as Blackpool were handed a way back into the game which they took full advantage of.

"We dominated the first half, should have been more than one up then the game would have been over. You can't miss that many chances," said Smith. "It's alright playing good football you've got to kill people off.

"We came out second half, gave away the stupidest free-kick away which led to a goal, although the lads did say the lad put it in with his hand. Even though, it's still a stupid free-kick and bad marking, and after that we never got going. They should never have scored from there.

"That puts us on the back foot, instead of being in control of the game, and then they get the second one.

"On set-plays, we have been doing it for the last three years while I have been here so usually we know how to deal with them. We should not be having any problems with the sizes we've got, people in the air. We were fast asleep.

"The same players were on the pitch for the second half. There's no ifs, no buts, they didn't play any better, it's just us. It's down to us and we have given them three points which I'm sure they are delighted."
