'Reasonable grounds' for Reds' point appeal

10/12/04

Steve WilliamsWREXHAM today lodged an appeal against their 10 point deduction.

Administrator Steve Williams revealed today: “We have lodged an appeal and under Football League rules it should be heard within 21 days. That would take it up to December 30.”

Wrexham became the first team to be docked 10 points under new League rules when they were put into administration at a High Court hearing in Manchester.

Legal experts have told the club’s administrators that they have ‘reasonable grounds’ for a case for which the £10,000 costs will be funded by local businessmen.

An independent three man panel will look at evidence from both the club and the Football League before deciding Wrexham’s fate.

Reds boss Denis Smith, the players and the fans will hope that decision is favourable, but they have plenty of points to play for before that December 30 deadline.

Milton Keynes Dons and not the appeal is top of Smith’s agenda, and for someone who has been far and wide in his football career as a manager and a player, Smith will tick off the one ground he’s never been to tomorrow – Milton Keynes Dons’ National Hockey Stadium.

“It’s a first for me,” said Smith , who made more than 500 appearances as a player, and has taken charge of more than 1,000 games as a manager.

“I think I’ve been to every other ground in the country,” he said.
