We want to help save Wrexham

Ray StubbsTWO leading football pundits last night pledged support for Wrexham FC.

Ray Stubbs and Garth Crooks said they wanted to help the ailing club after talks with local MP Ian Lucas.

Wrexham's desperate plight was the focus of an all-party parliamentary football group where the two presenters were guests last night.

There are plans for a crisis meeting in Wrexham which Mr Stubbs and Mr Crooks said they will attend. No date has been set yet.

Mr Lucas said: "Both men were interested in what I had to say and they have volunteered to visit Wrexham and speak to a meeting in the town.

"There are other special guests who we are also looking at lining up for the meeting.

"The situation at the club remains extremely serious and I understand there are plans to highlight it on the BBC's Final Score programme this weekend.

"The all-party group was extremely concerned about the situation at Wrexham FC. And more than 30 of my fellow MPs showed their interest in what is going on during the meeting."

The Inland Revenue has lodged a petition at the High Court to wind up Wrexham FC. It is due to be heard next Wednesday.

The Wrexham Supporters' Trust has tabled a second bid to buy Mr Hamilton out after its first offer was refused, while Wrexham council is trying to get Welsh Assembly grant funding.

Wrexham fan Karen Griffiths has set up a collection point for fans at Staffordshire Building Society's, Hill Street, Wrexham.

She said: "We are putting up a proper display with a poster and Wrexham football kit and asking people donate anything from 50p to a £1 or more."

The final amount will be handed over to Barclays bank. Donations can be sent to Wrexham's Fighting Fund c/o Carroll Clark, 4 Lyndale Grove, Wrexham, LL12 8DQ.
