You let me down

Denis SmithWREXHAM manager Denis Smith fears an FA Cup upset at Hayes this weekend unless his players learn the lessons from Tuesday's 2-1 defeat at Blackpool.

The Dragons had only one goal to show for their first-half domination in the re-arranged fixture at Bloomfield Road and paid heavily with two defensive howlers to gift the Seasiders their first League One home success since last April.

And with a High Court date looming on Wednesday that could signal the club's demise, Smith's verdict on Tuesday's events could prove to be a depressing epitaph.

"I very rarely lose my temper with my players after the game but I did on this occasion. They've let me down, they've let the club down and it might be the last league game this club plays," he said.

"It was ridiculous, even impossible for us to lose that.

"There are no ifs or buts because Blackpool didn't play any better in the second half. It was down to us. We've given them three points and I'm sure they are delighted."

Facing up to the reality of next week's Inland Revenue winding-up petition in respect of £900,000, the Dragons boss said it was pointless to look beyond Saturday's FA Cup first-round tie against Conference South opponents Hayes for the potential rewards of a good cup run.

"We've got a cup game on Saturday and we're in court on Wednesday and they could close us down," he added. "I don't know what the outcome will be. The only person who can answer that is (club owner) Mr Hamilton, and I've not spoken to him for three weeks.

"If we could make £500,000 out of the game on Saturday, it might be different but we can't look beyond next Wednesday. We'll go to Hayes on Saturday and we will be expecting to win. "But if we play like we did in the second half against Blackpool, my missus' team would beat us, even if she was playing as well."

Any High Court reprieve for Wrexham is likely to bring with it a mandatory 10-point deduction from the Football League, but Smith said he would welcome any lifeline.

"We'll have to wait and see if we get 10 points knocked off. If that's the case it makes life more difficult, but I can live with that," he said.

"If we play like we did here we'll have a major problem with the deduction, but if we play as we normally can we will get ourselves out of trouble.

"But that's not the point at the moment, because this game against Blackpool was important. The performance has upset me.

"It's okay producing good football for 45 minutes but you've got kill teams off and we didn't do that."
