We've got to worry for fans... and players

THE pressures of life in the Premiership are nothing compared to those at clubs struggling to survive in the Football League - such as Wrexham.

The Dragons are teetering on the brink right now and, as I've said before, I'm more than happy to do what I can to ensure that professional football remains in the town and at the Racecourse.

But if it's a worrying time for the fans, imagine what it's like for the players, whose livelihoods are under threat. Like the rest of us they have families to support and bills to pay and, while my heart goes out to them, I also thank my lucky stars that I'm in the Premiership.

Quite what the answer is I'm not sure. It's certainly not the solution adopted by the owners of Wimbledon, who transferred the club lock, stock and barrel to Milton Keynes.

Not only did they alienate their small but solid base of hardcore supporters, they lost a lot of their better players because of the financial uncertainties they had to overcome.

And, with the best will in the world, it's difficult to say they made the right decision. The team is struggling in the lower reaches of League One and their manager, Stuart Murdoch, this week paid the price.

How he was expected to turn things round in so short a time is beyond me but, as I've often said: What do I know about it? I'm only a professional footballer.
