Guterman No placardFORMER chairman Mark Guterman, the man Wrexham fans loved to hate before they discovered Alex Hamilton, last night insisted: "I'll fight to the death to save this club."

Guterman travelled to watch them win 4-0 at Hayes in the FA Cup yesterday, full of confidence that he can succeed in a last-ditch bid to save them.

The Reds are due in the High Court on Wednesday to fight a winding-up petition from the Inland Revenue.

Guterman last night revealed to Wales on Sunday. "I originally made a verbal offer to Alex Hamilton three months ago and so far it has not been accepted or rejected.

And flying in the face of recent predictions that the dub would go into administration, he insisted: "My plans for the club don't include administration, but they do include staying at the Racecourse for the next 100 years. I can't go into specifics because I don't want to exacerbate situations but we have been working for the last four or five months with people like [former chairman] Pryce Griffiths and [ex-manager] Dixie McNeil to save Wrexham.

"I don't want to jeopardise any deal by talking about what's on the table.

"But these people all want one thing, like me, which is to fight to the death to save the dub. There is always hope."

The fans aren't so happy with the thought of Guterman's return, 50 of them heckling him as he sat in the stand.

Manager Denis Smith insisted, though: "I don't think personalities should come into it because we need to be looking at saving the club. If that's down to Mr Guterman, so be it."
