Denis SmithWREXHAM boss Denis Smith today revealed that other clubs are interested in taking his players.

Since the Reds went into administration 10 days ago, managers have called Smith, who said: "I have had managers phoning me asking what the situation is with some of the players.

"There have been no silly offers, but I'm just pleased the managers are ringing me first."

Smith's paper-thin squad has already been ravaged by injuries this season and he knows there may be a threat of players having to be sold while the club is in the hands of the Preston-based administrators.

"The administrators are here to run the club as a business," said Smith. "It wouldn't matter if we were in administration or not, but if someone came in with a million quid for a player - and the player wanted to go - then of course, we'd do business.

"But we've had no offers for any player — just phone calls so far."

Smith told fans at last night's Wrexham Supporters' Trust meeting in the town that the administrator had so far let him get on with his job - and had not talked about cutting the playing squad.

Smith said: "I would be unwilling to sell any player unless he felt it was for the good of the club."

Something that would keep away the threat of player sales would be increased attendances at The Racecourse.

"I was disappointed with the crowd that turned up for the Stockport game and I'd like to see a lot more here against Hartlepool on Saturday," said Smith.

"If it's Christmas shopping or watching Wrexham, I know what my choice would be. Save your money and come and watch us."

And Smith could be boosted by the return of two influential players.

Darren Ferguson is back from suspension although he won't return to training until Thursday because of dental repair work on his wisdom teeth.

Midfielder Jim Whitley could also be back. He was pencilled in for a reserve team outing against Stockport, but because County have an FA Cup second round replay at Swansea tonight, that game has been shelved.

"Jim could be back for the weekend," added Smith, who is still without long term injury casualties Carlos Edwards, Dean Bennett, Danny Williams and Brian Carey.

Carey heads back to hospital for a scan on his troublesome knee tomorrow.

"Brian's knee is no better than it was before his op so a specialist is going to have another look," said Smith, who has been without Carey's steadying influence at the back for two months.

Carey's place has been taken by Shaun Pejic, who is suspended for Saturday's home clash with Hartlepool. Craig Morgan, who has recovered from injury and illness, could fill in for him.
