FANS campaigning to save Wrexham last night condemned former chairman Mark Guterman's proposed take-over of the Racecourse club.

Wrexham Supporters' Trust, which has twice seen its own bids turned down by club owner Alex Hamilton, yesterday questioned Mr Guterman's motives.

And they claimed his return to the boardroom would not be in the best interests of the League One club.

WST board member Rob Griffiths instead urged Wrexham directors Dave Bennett and Dave Griffiths to put the club into administration ahead of Wednesday's scheduled High Court date.

The Inland Revenue has issued a winding-up petition in respect of £900,000 unpaid tax.

"Voluntary administration is now the only realistic option that can secure the club's future," board member Mr Griffiths said yesterday.

"We cannot subscribe to the 'lesser of two evils' theory about Mark Guterman's return and we would refer any doubt-ers to his record at Chester and as previous chairman of Wrexham.

"The trust is aware that most of the current debts were accumulated during Mr Guterman's previous spell as chairman when accounts were not produced and shareholders and supporters were kept permanently in the dark about the real situation."

Last night, Mr Guterman declined to comment.

Wrexham fans staged a mock funeral procession before their FA Cup clash at the weekend. Some 300 supporters took part in the march to Hayes FC's ground in a stunt to mark what many fans feared could be their club's last game.

Daubed with the words "Rest in peace Wrexham FC - murdered by property developers", the coffin was carried by fans dressed as pallbearers to Hayes' Church Road stadium.

Protests continued inside the ground, where Wrexham beat the Nationwide South strugglers 4-0.

Fans waved red cards at Mr Guterman as he watched the game.
