Dave Bennett and Dave GriffithsWREXHAM FC chiefs are set to make a last-ditch bid to postpone a tax bill court hearing, which could liquidate the club.

Directors Dave Bennett and Dave Griffiths want a 14-day delay to sort out the crisis engulfing the Dragons.

Tomorrow the High Court is scheduled to hear an Inland Revenue petition to wind up the cash-strapped club. It owes the taxman £900,000.

The two directors hope a two-week stay could buy them enough time to save the Dragons.

They are expected to make a statement today about the hearing and the club's immediate future.

The club was buoyed by news yesterday Sky TV will pay to televise the FA Cup clash with Scunthorpe on December 3.

Mr Bennett said: "It has been a good day. Sky will pay £75,000 to televise our FA Cup match.

"There are certain things our solicitors have been looking at.

"We are hoping to get the hearing delayed to get the club sold or to do something before it goes into administration."

Supporters believe the club's best option is to go into administration, although the Dragons will be docked 10 points and pitched into a Division One relegation battle.

Court appointed experts would take over the club's management and its debts would be paid off in monthly instalments.

An offer is on the table from former chairman Mark Guterman.

But yesterday controversial owner Alex Hamilton said he was loathe to sell the club to Mr Guterman.

"Mr Guterman is yet to show me who his backers are," said Mr Hamilton. "But if he makes me a sufficient cash offer then I would have to give it serious consideration," he said..

Supporters are also against Mr Guterman taking over.

Mr Hamilton insists he does not want to see the club go into administration or liquidation.

Mr Hamilton claimed a rogue fan element, threatening his family and stealing mail from his box, stopped him putting a further £200,000 into the club.

"I have already put £374,000 into the club. I would urge 900 businesses to donate £1,000 each and local people to follow me and donate money," he said.

Mr Hamilton rejected two offers from the Wrexham Supporters' Trust to buy him out, saying they were unrealistic.

WST secretary Simon Johnson said: "We are hoping it will go into administration. We believe it is the best option.

"If they were docked 10 points, as it stands they would be placed second from bottom.

"It would not be impossible for them to avoid relegation."
