Players TunnelWREXHAM could be the first Football League club to be docked 10 points for going into voluntary administration.

The League One club applied for an Administration Order on Tuesday in order to avoid being wound up because of an £800,000 unpaid tax bill.

A Football League spokesman confirmed Wrexham will lose 10 league points and will be barred from signing any players once they enter administration.

Such a points loss would plunge Wrexham to the foot of the League One table.

As the table stands, the Dragons would drop down to one place above bottom club Stockport on 11 points.

Wrexham would have grounds to appeal against the Football League's punishment, but only on grounds of Force Majeure.

"They would need to prove they went into administration only as a result of unforeseeable and unavoidable circumstances," explained Football League spokesman Ian Christon.

Nationwide Conference side Northwich Victoria were the first side to fall foul of the Football League's new sanctions - implemented in May this year - when they called in the administrators in September.

League One side Bradford City are still in administration after they took the same action in February.
