Let's make history!

Denis SmithDENIS SMITH today laid down the challenge to his players to make history if Wrexham are deducted ten points.

Wrexham are heading for voluntary administration in an effort to prevent the club being wound up and with that comes the ten point penalty imposed by the Football League.

That would put Wrexham into the relegation zone and though there may be a strong case to fight against the sanction, Reds’ boss Smith says the challenge is there to beat the drop into League Two.

"We´ve now got two weeks breathing space and hopefully in that time something will happen," said Smith.

"If not, and we lose ten points, there is the challenge for us to be the first team to be deducted ten points and stay up.

"You need challenges in life. And while there is still a club here you can achieve things.

"You have to feel you can get out of it. If something happens it is a knock back but you can't feel sorry for yourselves. It's easy to be down and though I hope it doesn't happen, if it does we will have to take it on. We will want to reach safety."

Smith and his players have held talks with the likely person who will now run Wrexham's financial affairs and he was optimistic the club could avoid the deduction.

"The lads have had the likely administrator here talking to them and he was very positive. He said we could fight the ten point deduction because of the circumstances, it's a bit different in our case," said Smith.

"You look at our situation and there is somebody here trying to put us out of business."

Though seriously short of money, Smith is hoping to secure Juan Ugarte on a short-term deal. The Spanish striker is currently at the Racecourse on a non-contract basis and is paying his own way.

If possible, Smith also hopes to bring someone in on-loan before being put into administration but his first choice player, Finnish midfielder Jarno Heinikangas, who was a recent trialist, will not be heading to Wrexham.

"I'd like to give Juan a contract, he could do with some money!" said Smith. "And if possible I'd like to get another player in on-loan but I've not really got the money to do that at the moment.

"Ideally I could say I've got this player lined up, what can we do about it?

"That was Jarno Heinikangas but he has just got into the Finland national side for their next match. Jarno would have been ideal and he did very well here.

"The Finnish premier league has finished until April but it's difficult because we are outside their transfer window.

"I have not got anyone else lined up. He was the one I wanted."

Smith now turns his attention to Saturday's League One encounter with Bristol City and Wrexham will be hoping for a bigger than average crowd.

And though he knows he can't force fans to turn up on Saturday, Smith hopes they come along to help put the club in the shop window.

"I can appeal to fans and they either want to come or not," Smith said.

"I would like fans to come on Saturday. We could do with some money.

"A big gate would show somebody there is a reason to come to Wrexham and spend their money on the club."

Meanwhile former Wrexham midfielder Scott Green plays for the reserves at Shrewsbury today in the Pontins League.

Green is joined by Craig Morgan, eager to play after illness and injury, Alex Smith, Juan Ugarte, Matt Shaw and Mark Jones from the first team squad.
