Wrexham Evening Leader

Voice of The Leader

17/11/04

Brian Carey and Danny WilliamsTHE announcement that Wrexham Football Club is taking moves towards administration would years ago have been marked as a dark day for this region.

It says much about the club's current plight that directors David Bennett and David Griffiths were actually praised for yesterday's decision with supporters applauding them for their bravery and courage.

Of course the club may yet be saved from administration if a deal is struck within the two weeks.

But for that to happen the current owner Alex Hamilton has to have the will to sell. We must not forget that we are dealing with two issues: the salvaging of the club and the sale of the ground. Both are interlinked in that the club's future is intrinsically tied in to the Racecourse, and, vice versa, the ground is of no use without a club.

The Evening Leader has already clearly stated our case on this but today we feel it is prudent to stand up again and make our case on behalf of readers.

Mr Hamilton must sell both club and ground. The Assembly must step in to help the council purchase The Racecourse. The club must be run in the future by people who have the club's interests at heart.

Yesterday's announcement at least keeps the club on its feet.

Every reader who has been touched by the plight of Wrexham FC can play their part this Saturday by attending the match against Bristol City.

A huge turnout at The Racecourse will send a strong message to all parties involved in this crisis: Wrexham and the whole of North Wales will not let this football club die.
