Lee and Andy Williams will sit on 10,800 seats tomorrow |
TWO life-long Wrexham fans will put bums on
seats to raise money for the cash strapped club.
Today and tomorrow footballing mates Lee and Andy Williams will sit down - and
stand up - in all 10,800 seats in the Wrexham's Racecourse stadium.
They hope their novel fund-raising idea will net them more than £4,000, which
they plan to share between Wrexham FC Supporters Trust and local charities.
Lee, 36, of Acton, Wrexham, said: "We wanted to raise some money for the
Supporters Trust. There has been a lot of fund-raising events but we wanted to
do something different which had not been done before and would catch the
imagination. It was my wife Claire's idea.
"We plan to give half the money to the supporters trust and the other half we
will split between Hope House hospice and the children's ward at Wrexham Maelor
Hospital.
"Initially we planned on raising £1,000 but we have already passed that in
pledges. Now we have set a target of £4,000."
Andy, 34, of Gwersyllt, Wrexham, who works for a Manchester-based plastics
company, and Lee, a teacher at a Shropshire high school, have both supported
Wrexham since they were children.
The pair plan to try and sit on every stadium seat, starting today for a couple
of hours and then completing the rest of their task starting very early
tomorrow.
They hope to finish a couple of hours before Wrexham's home game against
Hartlepool kicks off at 3pm. Wrexham MP Ian Lucas plans to join them during the
last hour of their sit-ups.
"We're both reasonably fit but we've not developed a technique. Getting up and
down every time is likely to be tough on the knees so we might have to slide a
lot.
"At three or four seconds a seat it might take about 10 hours but we will have
to add on some extra time for breaks," said Lee..
Details of the fund-raiser have been posted on the Hartlepool club website,
"just in case some Hartlepool supporters think there are a couple of nutters
trying to take their seats", said Lee.
Wrexham FC is in administration with total debts of £2.5m, although several
buyers are reported to be interested in acquiring the club.
