Ownership deal probed

23 December 2004

The Welsh Assembly are looking into The Racecourse in June 2002

THE Welsh Assembly is taking a close look at the deal which changed the ownership of Wrexham FC.

Many fans see the deal, in June, 2002, as the start of Alex Hamilton’s plans to move the club from The Racecourse and use the land for housing.

Mr Hamilton has consistently denied doing anything wrong when the freehold was bought for £300,000 and then transferred for nothing to another of his companies, Damens.

The Leader has been told Assembly sports boss Alun Pugh is examining that deal.

In a letter to a fan, an official says: “I am sure you are aware the Minister has met representatives from Wrexham Council to discuss the issue.

“The Assembly Government wants The Racecourse to continue as a venue for regional and international sport and also wants to protect the extensive public investment in the ground.

“It appears that in 2002, a land transfer took place without the consent of the Sports Council for Wales and the Minister is now closely examining the legal position on this matter.

“The Sports Council has also written to Mr Hamilton informing him of this.”
