MP takes up fight on Reds' points cut

Protest bannerWREXHAM MP lan Lucas will urge the Football League not to deduct 10 points from Wrexham FC if the club does go into administration.

Under League rules any club which goes into administration is punished by having 10 points taken from it.

But Mr Lucas believes Wrexham are a special case and if the club does go into administration he will write to the Football League asking them to take a lenient view.

Directors announced recently they would start the process of putting the club into administration in an attempt to ensure its survival.

On November 17, Wrexham FC was given 28 days breathing space in court action by the Inland Revenue to have the club wound-up over tax debts of £800,000.

High Court Judge Chief Registrar Baister adjourned a winding-up petition for 28 days after he heard an administration petition had been lodged by the club. Mr Lucas said: "I would argue Wrexham has not got itself deliberately into this situation by trying to gain an advantage over their opponents. I would argue that business mismanagement has led to this situation and the team on the field should not be punished. If they have to be punished I will be asking if the punishment could be less than 10 points."

Mr Lucas said there was an appeal system in place against the deduction of points under the regulations which state a club may only appeal against a deduction of points on the ground the insolvency procedures arose solely as a result of a Force Majeure event - one that, having regard to all of the circumstances, is reasonably considered to have been unforeseeable and unavoidable.

The cost of the appeal is £5,000, the regulations state.

Club director Dave Bennett said in paperwork to the league the club would be arguing that it had faced exceptional circumstances.
