Green light for Scott

Scott GreenVETERAN midfielder Scott Green is on the verge of making a comeback for injury-hit Wrexham at Huddersfield Town tomorrow.

The hugely experienced 34-year-old has been training with the Dragons for the past few weeks and manager Denis Smith - who is without eight senior professionals - is hoping to complete the necessary paperwork this morning to sign him on non-contract forms.

Green played a key role in Wrexham's promotion campaign in 2003, with three goals in 15 appearances as Smith's men lost just once from the time of his arrival in February through to the final game of the season.

And the Racecourse boss is hoping that Green will have a similarly positive effect second time round.

"When he joined us for training he hadn't played since April and was obviously overweight," Smith said last night. "He's done well and played in the reserves for us last week and we are now running short of numbers with new injuries to Steve Roberts and Alex Smith.

"He gives me the sort of experience you can't buy. He's a bubbly character to have around and he is a good talker on the field, which is something we are missing at the moment.

"He did well for me the last time he was here but the circumstances are a bit different today. But if we get him registered he will be in the squad for Saturday's game." Green, who left Wrexham for a much-improved offer from ambitious Nationwide Conference outfit Telford United, endured an unhappy time at the Buck's Head, firstly suffering a cruciate ligament injury and then losing his job when the club went out of business.

But last night he said he was delighted to be involved in first-team football again.

"Obviously Wrexham have bigger things to worry about than paying players at the moment and I'm just pleased to be able to help the club out," he said. "From now on it's in my own hands and up to me to do well enough so that I might get something a bit more permanent. I've always believed you only get out of football what you are prepared to put in."
