Mel PejicMEL PEJIC explained today why he "lost his head" on the touchline last night, writes RICHARD WILLIAMS.

The Wrexham physio was involved in a confrontation by the dug-out with the Doncaster Rovers bench after seeing his son, Shaun, caught up in a reckless challenge by opponent Ricky Ravenhill.

Shaun was stretchered off following the incident and though the possible cruciate ligament injury is not as bad as first thought, he is still expected to be on the sidelines for at least two months.

Seething at the challenge, Mel, who was with Shaun in hospital today, said: "It was reckless and I just lost my head a little bit. I had a few words to say about it. I just had a valid point to make and there has been worse on the touchline before - just ask Joey Jones.

"Maybe it was the wrong time to do it but it had all bottled up. The player should have got sent off.

"I feel for any lads who suffer a challenge like that. I've been there before and you don't like to see it. I feel for Shaun, and it is a little bit closer to home because he is my son."

Manager Denis Smith also supported Mel, a former centre-back at The Racecourse who is still a big favourite of the fans.

Smith said: "I didn't think it was the best of challenges but that happens in football. We'll see on the video but I'm pretty certain it will show it wasn't and the lad will be disappointed with it - not as disappointed as Shaun will be.

"Of course Mel was upset. He's a father and as any father would be, he knew what had gone on and the damage that had been caused.

"I can understand him being upset. Everybody's got feelings and it's alright saying keep it under control."

Early indications are that Pejic, in outstanding form this season, has some damage to the knee but is awaiting further tests before the true seriousness is revealed.

"Shaun has just seen a consultant and it's not as bad as we thought," added Mel. "There is a tear on one of the cruciate ligaments. Shaun will have a scan to see how much damage there is to the knee joint.

"I Imagine he will be out for a couple of months but we'll have to wait for the results."
