Praise for fans after trouble free day
29 December 2005
POLICE
have praised football fans for their behaviour after the derby clash between
Chester City and Wrexham was called off because of the weather.
The evening passed off peacefully, with police making only one arrest.
A visible police presence in Chester city centre seemed to pay off as there were
few incidents of violent disorder.
A huge operation had been put in place by both Cheshire Constabulary and North
Wales Police, but it was scaled down after news of the postponement.
The arrest was made at 8.20pm for violent disorder. No other details have been
released by police.
Jane Gregory, a Cheshire Constabulary spokeswoman, said: "It was quiet. The
police presence provided reassurance for all those in Chester. We were kept
busy, but there were no major incidents.
"Despite the match being called off, a strong police presence was maintained in
the Chester city centre as intelligence showed violent disorder could occur away
from the ground.
"The joint approach was in response to the historical violence between small
elements of both sets of fans. Both forces liaised closely in developing and
implementing the plans around the event.
"A joint command team controlled operations on the day, including
representatives from Cheshire Police, Chester City Council, and the Community
Safety Wardens.
"Cheshire Police wish to thank supporters from both clubs for their co-operation
and responsible attitude. The increased presence of officers in the city centre
and surrounding areas played a key part in ensuring the safety of everyone who
was in the city centre."
A new date for the match will be decided on soon.
