The Racecourse GroundA MULTI-MILLION-POUND “vision” to transform Wrexham FC’s Racecourse Ground will be unveiled today.

It will be presented to the Welsh Assembly Government Sport and Culture Minister Alun Pugh during a meeting at the ground this afternoon.

The “vision” is to transform the 15,000 capacity ground into an all-seater, modern-day facility big enough to stage international football and rugby, and rock concerts, if funding can be secured.

Millions of pounds is needed to carry out the transformation and plans are at early stages, but a presentation will be made at the meeting, which will be chaired by former Wales international Barry Horne.

The man behind the vision is local businessman Nev Dickens, who this morning said he hoped to make The Racecourse an international venue for rugby as well as football.

He was hopeful funding could be secured following today’s meeting.

The League Two club was bought by Mr Dickens and a local consortium in August, after more than 18 months in administration.

Today’s meeting will highlight the importance of the facility to the region and highlight how it could be developed as an all-year-round leisure, educational and conferencing facility.

Chief executive Anthony Fairclough told the Evening Leader of his hopes for the future.

He said: “We are at the early stages at the moment, and today is the first phase draft of our feasibility study carried out over the past five months.

“This is our chance to launch it and hope we can start the funding process.

“We hope to be able to host activities other than football, including concerts, in a state-of-the-art arena.”

Mr Fairclough said there were several phases to the development, including the redevelopment of The Kop and the Mold Road Stands.

Wrexham Council has granted outline planning permission for a multi-million- pound redevelopment scheme, which includes an eight-storey block of flats for 300 students at the nearby North East Wales Institute, together with private apartments, a retail area and a new stand.

The meeting is expected to set out the importance of the facility to North East Wales, and how it could be developed as a year-round leisure, educational and confrencing centre.
