Chris LlewellynCHRIS LLEWELLYN believes Wrexham have got what it takes to beat Scunthorpe United at Glanford Park tomorrow in the FA Cup second round (3pm kick off).

Llewellyn has been in a rich vein of form this season since re-joining Wrexham from Hartlepool United and is the Reds leading scorer with seven goals in all competitions.

Having scored in Wrexham’s impressive 2-1 victory against Lincoln CIty last weekend, the Welsh international is confident the Reds can get something out of the trip to the League One highfliers and embark on a successful cup run.

“We are starting to get players back and our last few performances have been encouraging so we are going to Scunthorpe full of confidence,” said Llewellyn today. “Scunthorpe are a good side, near the top of their division, and it will be difficult but we have to play like we did against Sheffield Wednesday and Birmingham CIty in the Carling Cup.

“Sometimes teams from a higher division take you lightly and underestimate you. If they do that we stand a good chance of beating them. We are not going there to make up the numbers and believe we can do it.

“We have got belief in ourselves. The gaffer kept faith with us when we were going through a rough patch so it would be nice to repay him with a good cup run. That brings revenue into the club, as we found with the LDV Vans Trophy, and the more wins you get gives more confidence and has an impact on league form. It is massively important to have a cup run this year.”

Llewellyn has scored in the FA Cup in the last two campaigns. Two years ago the 27-year-old struck for the Reds in the 4-0 victory against Hayes, and he also scored from the penalty spot in Hartlepool’s 2-1 defeat at the hands of Conference side Tamworth.

And Llewellyn, who has been paired in attack with a host of different players this season due to injuries, is hoping to get an FA Cup goal for the third year running.

“I’ve been scoring lately and have got some goals in the FA Cup the last few season so hopefully I can make it third time running,” added Llewellyn. “I think I have played in attack with about seven or eight different players this season. It can be difficult playing with someone new all the time but as long as I am playing I don’t mind who it is with.”

Kevin Smith, who has agreed to stay at Wrexham for a second month, was Llewellyn’s strike partner against Lincoln but the on-loan Sunderland man, eligible to play tomorrow along with another loanee, Maheta Molango, has not trained for two days due to a viral infection.

Reds’ boss Denis Smith is keeping his fingers crossed Smith will declare himself available but Juan Ugarte and Lee McEvilly have been named in the squad.

“Kevin has not trained and I have got a problem if he does not make it. I might have to change the shape,” said Smith today. I don’t want to play Juan or Lee from the start so we will see how Kevin is today.”

Like Llewellyn, Smith is confident Wrexham can claim at least a draw.

“We know we are a better side than our position indicates,” said Smith. “But it is no good talking - we have to go out and prove it. We know we can do better results wise and have to start doing that. And with two away games in the league after tomorrow, it will be a good time to put our away form right.

“It will possibly be harder than the games against Sheffield Wednesday and Birmingham because Scunthorpe are in form, where as the other two weren’t at the time we played them.

“But football matches are not played on paper, it is what happens on the day. We are going there looking forward to the game and are up for it.

“It would be nice to be in the draw for the third round on Sunday, whether we win or draw. I would take a draw but a win would be better.”

Scunthorpe’s threat comes in the shape of striker Billy Sharp who has scored 16 goals in all competitions this season.

But Smith is delighted with the partnership formed between centre-backs Steve Evans and Shaun Pejic and said: “Let’s see if their front two are as good as people say. Steve and Shaun have gelled well, have formed a good partnership which is important, and are playing well.

“It will be nice to get through and have the chance of walking out at a big ground. I enjoy the big occasions and have enjoyed the big arena as a player, and as a manager. It would be great if we can do that this season.”

Ryan Valentine has overcome a groin problem but Matty Done has failed to recover from an ankle injury, so Josh Johnson is expected to continue on the left wing.
