Mike WilliamsMIKE WILLIAMS believes Wrexham will start shooting up the League Two table if they can build on their unbeaten run.

The three-match run, which includes four points from two league outings and an FA Cup victory against Scunthorpe United, has left the Reds just eight points away from the playoffs with a game in hand.

And defender Williams, who was in the Wrexham side that drew 1-1 at Torquay on Tuesday night, is focussed on getting to the play-offs and hopes the Reds can embark on the sort of unbeaten run they had at the start of the season, with lowly Boston United next up at York Street on Saturday.

“We have just got to look forward to Boston now. It is another long away trip and we have got to concentrate on getting a win there. That would be four points in two games this week and will push us up for the table,” said Williams today.

“We just need to keep our unbeaten run going like we did at the start of the season. If you are getting wins, or even draws, as long as you are not losing games it keeps the lads’ confidence up.

“After the last couple of weeks, everyone has been confident with the wins we have been getting and I think we needed that. We needed to get on a good run, especially with the Christmas period coming up, because there are so many games.

“If you can get on a run and pick up a good few results you will move up the table because the league is so tight. That is what we want because we are looking at the play-offs.”

Williams was first to admit that conditions were not ideal at a windy Plainmoor on Tuesday when Wrexham drew 1-1 with Torquay.

With the advantage of the wind, Wrexham took an early lead through onloan Kevin Smith, who now has two goals in two games, while a stunning free-kick in the second half earned Torquay a draw.

vAnd although disappointed not to win, Williams was delighted with Wrexham’s battling performance, particularly after the break when the Reds had a severe wind in their faces.

“It was a long trip, and all the preparation was right, but we got to the ground and the conditions – well, I don’t know how to describe it really. It was a gloomy night and a very strong wind. But the lads stuck in.

“I know we did not get the win after going 1-0 up and we were quite disappointed with a draw. We have been doing well lately, had won the last couple of games and were looking for three points. But you can’t do anything about the conditions and it was a great strike by the lad to equalise.

“Sometimes having the wind isn’t always to your benefit because the ball can sometimes go out of play when you are playing balls in. It works both ways but if we had got that second goal in the first half, maybe we would have finished the game off.

“It was very difficult to defend with that wind. The ball was swirling in the air, you can’t make excuses but it is hard.

“It was not so much about the football, it was about battling and I think that has been the difference the last few games. The lads have been battling for each other and you can see it.”

Williams, who has now started the Reds’ last eight matches at left-back, is delighted to have a run in the side and hopes to stay in manager Denis Smith’s plans.

“I have been happy to keep my place and play regular football. If the gaffer wants to keep me in the team I will keep trying to do my best,” added Williams. “If I am not in the side, I have to live with it. I just want to keep on trying to impress so he keeps me in the team. I just want to get my head down and concentrate on my football.

“The gaffer has been praising the defence lately but I think it is more a whole team performance. It is not just the defence, people have been scoring goals at the other end to get us wins.”
