Denis SmithDENIS SMITH hopes to cap off Wrexham’s busy week of travelling with victory against Boston United at York Street tomorrow (3pm).

Wrexham go into the clash at struggling Boston on the back of a 1-1 League Two draw at Torquay on Tuesday and an excellent 2-0 FA Cup win against Scunthorpe United last weekend.

The Reds, unbeaten in their last three matches, will have clocked up more than 1,000 miles after tomorrow’s clash, and manager Smith hopes to end their spell of three away fixtures in a week with a three point return.

“It will be excellent to get a win and I am looking forward to the match,” said Smith today. “I don’t think we will do this much travelling in a week unless we were to get into Europe! But getting the right result is all that matters.

“I was looking for at least two wins from the three matches so a win tomorrow will make it a great week.

“The lads who have been playing have not done much training in between matches but the ones who have not been playing have had to work hard. It has been a case of getting the balance right.”

Wrexham have conceded just five goals in their last eight matches but Smith is also delighted with the way his side are performing at the other end with on-loan striker Kevin Smith scoring twice in the last two outings.

“It was a great free-kick which Torquay scored from on Tuesday but you could not see them getting a goal any other way,” said Smith. “The defending has been superb but we just can’t rely on the back-line.

“We are looking a threat at the other end. Kevin has scored two in two games and Chris Llewellyn has been in the goals lately so we are okay at the other end.”

Smith has named the same starting line-up for the last three matches but could be forced into changes.

Midfielder Darren Ferguson has a cold while another midfielder, Mark Jones, who was forced off at half-time against Torquay because of illness, is doubtful.

Striker Lee McEvilly, a substitute in Wrexham’s last three matches, is definitely out with a chest infection so skipper Neil Roberts, back following an ankle injury, is expected to make the trip.

“Mark’s head was thumping and was feeling it on the way down to Torquay and he is doubtful,” said Smith. “Darren is not as bad as Mark and we are hoping he will be okay.”

If Ferguson does line up against Boston, the midfielder will make his 350th appearance for Wrexham and Smith said that was a great achievement: “Darren has been a good servant and playing that many games for the same club takes some doing at this level,” he said. “Darren sees and executes passes as good as you will get.”

Another former Manchester United player, Lee Roche, is enjoying a run in the side having seen appearances limited because of injury, and the 26-year-old believes Wrexham can clinch three points at Boston: “It’s good to be playing again and I seem to be doing okay,” said Roche. “I’ve been unfortunate with injuries and needed a run of games and feel better for that. We’ve looked solid at the back so it’s been going well.”

“It is a good opportunity for us to get a win tomorrow. Boston are struggling so hopefully we can get three points.

“Maybe we should have got three points at Torquay but we played well enough considering the conditions. It will be great to end the week on a high note.”

As well struggling on the field, Boston’s off-the-field problems hit an all-time low this week when the club was refused planning permission for a new ground.

And although Smith can sympathise with the Lincolnshire outfit, he is just focussed on a Wrexham victory tomorrow.

“After what we have gone through, it is not pleasant for Boston and can be disturbing for everyone at the club,” added Smith. “Unfortunately, I don’t want to help them out on the pitch tomorrow.”
