The Racecourse is in the plans for Euro bid

13/12/06

David CollinsWALES are considering making a joint bid with Scotland to host a future European Championship finals tournament.

And Wrexham’s Racecourse Ground would be one of the venues if the FAW were successful in their attempts to co-host the 2016 tournament.

International football returned to The Racecourse last month and the near 10,000 crowd surpassed everyone's expectations for a low key friendly against Leichtenstein.

Wales won 4-0 with Chris Llewellyn scoring and Mark Jones and Steve Evans making their international debuts.

And Reds boss Denis Smith today welcomed the news and said: “Obviously it is according to how they do it and they would need stadiums in Wales. There are two stadiums in south Wales and they would want to use one in North Wales, so there is The Racecourse here in Wrexham.

“It shows ambition, the Welsh FA is one of the oldest associations and have never had a major finals, so it would be super as long as the north gets something.”

That was one of the main topics of conversation during yesterday’s top level meeting between in the Football Association of Wales and the Welsh Assembly Government.

FAW Secretary General David Collins said: “This was an excellent meeting with frank and open views being expressed on both sides. It was very pleasing to both sides to see that on every subject we were in agreement.

“I am delighted to say that both sides recognise the support that each party makes to football in Wales. The Welsh Assembly Government and the Football Association of Wales will make every effort to continue this excellent dialogue for the benefit of Welsh football.”

Collins was joined by Alan Pugh, the Welsh Assembly’s Sports Minister, Jon Beynon, the Assembly’s Senior Sport policy adviser and Peter Rees, the President of the FAW The meeting covered a wide range of issues including, Independent European Sports Review 2006, Wales hosting the UEFA Cup Final at The Millennium Stadium, FAW National Training Facility.
