Dennis LawrenceWREXHAM'S World Cup star Dennis Lawrence has emerged as one of four possible targets as Kenny Jackett continues his search for a centre-back.

The Swansea City boss is desperate to bolster his defensive options before the transfer window shuts at the end of the month.

And the Evening Post understands Lawrence, who shone for the minnows of Trinidad & Tobago in Germany this summer, is on a list of potential recruits.

At 6ft 7in, he is the joint tallest player in the Football League and is known for his aerial prowess in both penalty boxes.

Now 32, Lawrence could be available for a relatively small fee as he is in the final year of his Racecourse contract.

But Wrexham boss Denis Smith is unlikely to be keen to see one of his senior players leave.

Lawrence has played in all three of the North Wales club's games so far this season, taking his appearance tally since Brian Flynn signed him from Trinidadian side Defence Force in 2001 to 216.

He has scored 16 goals for the Dragons, and has also netted four times in 66 internationals for the Soca Warriors, who ran England close at the World Cup.

Swansea's hierarchy were refusing to talk names today, but admit they are still in the market for a new man at the back.

"We're working hard to try to bring in a centre-half," chairman Huw Jenkins said, "and there are three or four ideas we're concentrating on.

"We're hopeful that we'll get someone in before the transfer window closes, although we all know how hard these things can be.

"There are not a lot of players around to go for, but (chief scout) Kevin Reeves is watching game after game trying to give us options.

"But then we have to see what the particular club think and then we have to try to agree with the player.

"The problem is that whatever league they're in, everybody is keen to hang on to their better players."

After defensive frailties cost them dear last season, Swansea missed out on the likes of Roger Johnson, Dean Leacock and Sam Sodje during the summer.

The loss of Garry Monk to a long-term knee injury has made the need for new blood even more acute.

"We're looking to strengthen, but I only want to sign someone if they have the experience and quality to improve us," Jackett said.

"Maybe I spent too much time in the summer aiming too high, going for players who had a lot of options and who ended up with some big contracts.

"But it's obvious what we need now and there are irons in the fire."

Fulham youngster Leacock signed for Derby last week, a month after a £375,000 move to Swansea fell through on medical grounds.

"It will be interesting to see how he goes," Jackett said.
