Dragons are quids in if they can win

WREXHAM’S
footballers will collect a bumper £20,000 Christmas box if they win all their
four games over the festive period.
The lucrative bounty has been put up by club sponsor, Leasedirect Finance, which
will donate the cash to the players’ pool if they pick up a maximum 12 points
from their home matches against Darlington and Accrington Stanley and visits to
Rochdale and Hereford United.
Dragons’ boss Denis Smith has welcomed the incentive, but conceded it would be a
tall order for his squad who have been hindered by injuries and are currently
hovering just above the relegation zone.
“It’s a great initiative from our sponsors, who are trying to make things
happen,” Smith said yesterday. “Winning four games on the trot is something
we’ve not managed to do this season and I’m sure you could get very good odds
against us doing it over Christmas.
“But this is a pro-active gesture from Leasedirect in a bid to get us going,
which is great. The players should not need any added incentive to win every
game they play, but this challenge will add a bit of spice to what promises to
be an important and testing spell of games.”
And Wrexham are displaying the Christmas spirit by offering free admittance to
tomorrow’s match against Darlington to the first 100 fans who turn up at the
Racecourse box office in full Santa Claus outfit.
Club secretary Geraint Parry said: “This idea has been used at several grounds
before, including our visit to Carlisle United last season, and helped produced
a good festive atmosphere.”
