Neil RobertsROBERTS, who has re-joined his home-town club after leaving Doncaster Rovers last month, scored twice in Wrexham's 3-0 victory over Dungannon.

It was Roberts' third pre-season friendly for the Reds, having previously impressed against Liverpool and Manchester City, and the striker opened his account following an excellent move and then rounded off the scoring by netting from close range from a loose ball.

And Roberts was thrilled to have got his first goals.

“I am delighted. Really made up. You always want to score that first goal,” said Roberts.

“The first came from a well worked move, and I am happy with the finish, and the second was a typical striker's goal. You have to be there and maybe that is something I have not done enough of before. I need to be a bit more selfish.

“I want to push on from this now and get more goals. I am desperate to do well and score for Wrexham. If I can get as many goals as possible it can only help the team. But as long as the team is winning, it does not matter who scores, though I want to play my part."

Roberts operated as a lone striker in a 4-2-3-1 system before Reds' boss Denis Smith reverted to a 4-4-2 formation, with Chris Llewellyn, Wrexham's other scorer, moving into attack.

“I do enjoy playing up front on my own,” added Roberts.

“It helps you work on other aspects of your game like holding the ball up and bringing other players into play - and I like a good battle with a centre-half!

“You have to win a lot of headers but have to learn not to work too hard outside the penalty area. If I am not in there, no-one else will be if I'm the only striker.

“It is something different for the manager and it gives him options.”
