WREXHAM
manager Denis Smith has revealed he’s aiming to make three signings after the
transfer window opens next week.
"Two or three new faces would give everyone a bit of a boost and we need to have
a situation where players are looking over their shoulders at the competition,"
he said.
"At the moment, if they can walk they are getting into the squad. So it’s been a
frustrating first half of the season. Yes we do need a massive improvement and
we are capable of producing that."
Smith’s targets do not include Welsh Premier striker Rhys Griffiths despite BBC
Wales reporting the Dragons were chasing the 26-year-old Llanelli player.
Smith was quoted as saying: "It will be difficult, but I will try to persuade
Rhys that a move to the Football League could reap big rewards over time."
However, the Racecourse boss last night told the Daily Post: "I can’t remember
saying that to anyone and, as far as I recall, I haven’t spoken to anyone from
BBC Wales either today or yesterday.
"We certainly looked at Griffiths back in September or October, but there is no
way I would discuss a player in those terms unless I had spoken to the club
concerned.
"And if I was involved with Llanelli I would not be happy to read something like
this in advance of any such contact."
Griffiths, who scored 28 goals for Port Talbot last season to claim the Welsh
Premier’s Golden Boot award, moved to Llanelli in the summer.
Although Llanelli are a full-time club, Griffiths is one of their part-time
members and works as a firefighter.
