Brian CareyBRIAN CAREY is urging his Wrexham team to build on Saturday's victory.

Wrexham beat Lincoln City 1-0 at The Racecourse, ending a six game losing streak – four in League Two – and moving off the bottom of the table in the process.

Carey had a feeling his all week that his side were determined to end their barren spell and he wants a similar performance when the Reds host Chesterfield tomorrow.

"It was a much needed win," said Carey today. "The manner in which we played was good but more importantly, we got the result. We are delighted with the win.

"I have sensed it all week that this is a group of players who were going to come good. I could tell before the game they were hungry for a win, and long may it continue.

"Football is all about what is going on in your head and how you are, and I just think we had 11 people who were really determined, played together and wanted to be part of a winning team.

"It is one win – three points – we have got to keep it going now. We have got a long way to go but we have stopped the rot if you like. We need to push on."

Although Neil Roberts missed a 19th minute, three points were sealed when Marc Williams scored a well taken second half goal.

And Carey praised the contribution of frontmen Roberts and Williams, who added to last week's strike against Stockport.

"It was a good goal from Marc. Our front two caused them a lot of problems," said Carey. "When we missed the penalty, I just thought keep going, and believing what we are doing. That is what we are like nower days. We've had our setbacks but just stick to the game plan, what we set out to do."

Wrexham switched to a 3-5-2 formation, with Danny Williams dropping back into defence, and the Reds went on to keep their first clean sheet of the season.

Delighted with the shut-out, Carey was also happy to see chances created at the other end.

"We changed the system and it worked quite well," said Carey. "I just thought we had 11 performances.

"I have said all along that we have got to be adaptable in how we play, and flexible in everything we do.

"I think we looked a lot more solid. We worked a lot on it and I was pleased with how the defensive side went, and we created enough chances as well."

Lincoln were reduced to 10 men when Gary Croft was sent off for a second bookable offence on the hour mark, but the Imps produced a late rally.

However, Carey believes Wrexham should have had victory sown up before then.

"Lincoln went down to 10 men and from their point of view, 10 men came good," said Carey. "We dipped a little bit and started doing things we have been doing in previous weeks, running with the ball instead of letting the ball do the work.

"We caused our own problems in that spell but having said that, we had yet again enough chances to kill the game off and we should have done.

"That is the only real criticism I have had."

Carey fielded four teenagers in his starting eleven and he added: "One thing we have got here is a lot of talented youngsters coming through.

"They are all capable players and acquitted themselves very well on Saturday but you can't expect them to do that for 46 games.

"The blend of youth and experience helps, but I think it is fantastic for the future of this club that we have got players of that age coming in and doing the job."
