Sam Aiston: Away trips will be like this

WREXHAM
midfielder Sam Aiston declared himself well satisfied with a share of the spoils
following Saturday’s 0-0 draw with Rochdale.
The on-loan Northampton man, who is expected to make his move to the Racecourse
permanent when the transfer window opens again next month, claimed points were
more important than performances in the short term as Wrexham bid to climb away
from the foot of League Two.
“It’s what a lot of our away games are going to be like over the next couple of
months,” he said.
“We set ourselves up to get a result and a point because we desperately need
points and so we are happy with that.
“It was a good result from the first of three tough away games and if we get
something from them all we’ll be happy. And if we can get some wins on the board
back at home so much the better.”
Aiston, who has played under new Racecourse boss Brian Little in the past,
added: “I knew what to expect today and it wasn’t a great game, but we dug in
together and that’s what the gaffer wants from us.
“I thought the fans were brilliant today and they also have a big part to play
for us.
“We’ve worked hard to tighten up and now we need to try and create a bit more at
the same time.
“But that will come in the future – the immediate priority is to stop conceding
goals.
“When you come away you need to pick up points but when we are at home we will
try to play some more attractive football and that’s where we will definitely be
looking for the wins.”
Little, still unbeaten after two games in charge, expanded on Aiston’s theme and
insisted that his primary aim was to make Wrexham a more difficult team to beat.
“We have worked on a couple of systems in the last week or two to make ourselves
a little harder to beat and I think in that respect to come away and get a 0-0
is the sort of start we are looking for,” said the Dragons boss.
“I’d like to try and improve some aspects of our own play and there was a little
spell in the second half when we looked better. But we tried to rush things in
the final third because we were not there very often.
“It’s a difficult week but we’ve started well. Rochdale are a good side, they
play well at home and they have good wide players who deliver the ball into the
box. But in the main we coped reasonably well with them.
“They obviously had the better chances and more of the action in our goalmouth,
but I’m pleased.
“I guess there have been games this season that Wrexham might have drawn but
that they lost and if those points had been gathered we’d be higher up.
“We need a series of games from which we pick up points and we’ll look at the
broader picture as we go along. In the short term I’ve come in, tried to make
the players more difficult to beat and worked with them on the training ground.
“We need to be disciplined, to have a pattern of play which we know can soak up
pressure but not give away too many chances and I think we’ve done a little bit
of that so far.”
