Anthony WilliamsANTHONY WILLIAMS today admitted that Wrexham players have to stand up and be counted at Accrington Stanley tomorrow.

Wrexham head to the Fraser Eagle Stadium for tomorrow night's clash on the back of a 4-0 home defeat against Chesterfield on Tuesday.

The Reds' hopes of getting anything out of that game were effectively ended after just 15 minutes as Chesterfield took advantage of woeful defending to race into a 3-0 lead.

Goalkeeper Williams accepted it was an unacceptable performance and the former Wales under 21 international said the Reds have to make amends by producing the goods at Accrington.

"Everyone knows it was not a good performance and the fans were right to show their frustrations. I understand their frustrations, they have a right to do that," said Williams, responding to the Reds being booed off at the final whistle.

"That was not acceptable – we know the performance was not good enough.

"The players, though, are the worst. The gaffer does everything well, everything for us, and we go out and give a performance like that. For him, and the fans, we owe everyone a big performance now.

"Everyone has to go out tomorrow and I think most, if not all of us, owe a performance."

Maesteg-born Williams said talks were held in the changing room following Tuesday's defeat which saw Wrexham drop to second from bottom in the League Two table.

The honest shot-stopper said: "A few home truths have been told in there. But we all know we were poor and we had a long chat. The fact of the matter is, we let the manager and the fans down and we have to make sure we don't do that again.

"You can't win one game and expect to be brilliant week in, week out.

"Every game you have got to work harder and harder to keep producing that standard, and on Tuesday it was not that performance."

Williams admitted the defending left a lot to be desired as highflying Chesterfield were gifted openings and the 30-year-old took responsibility for conceding the opener just six minutes into the game.

"I will hold my hands up for the first goal, I should have kept hold of it," said Williams.

"It was basically a shell-shocked first 15 minutes. We had a few chances after that, but Chesterfield hit the bar and the post and it could have been a heck of a lot worse.

"It is a bit of a come down after Saturday and a lot of people owe us a performance at Accrington, myself included.

"Football is like that, it builds you up and then gives you a kick in the teeth. It was sloppy defending all over the place – it is little silly things again. We can't let that creep back into our game."

Wrexham had ended a run of six consecutive defeats by beating Lincoln City at the weekend, and Williams spoke about what needs to be done on the pitch at Accrington tomorrow to bounce back for the Chesterfield trouncing.

"We won 1-0 on Saturday so from that to the Chesterfield defeat is light years away," added Williams. "We have got to go there, graft, dig in, and work hard for each other – at least show the fans we are committed.

"Hopefully we can turn the corner for the gaffer and the supporters."
