Rallying cry for Reds

Danny WilliamsDANNY WILLIAMS has called on his team-mates to pull together and haul Wrexham out of their lowly position.

Wrexham take on Accrington Stanley tonight at The Fraser Eagle Stadium (7.45pm) on the back of a 4-0 midweek home defeat against Chesterfield.

That result saw Wrexham fall to second from bottom in the League Two table, though the Reds do have a game in hand.

And Williams, who has switched to a defensive role in the last two outings, said the onus was on the players to start performing for manager Brian Carey and improve the Reds' current standing.

"It has not been the manager's fault, it is the players. And as a team, we have been under-performing," said Williams today.

"Fans have got doubts about this team but the manager has belief in us, and the lads have belief in each other.

"We have to prove it in games.

"The senior players like myself have to help the young lads along, and vice versa. We are all in it together.

"There is no 'I' in team and we have to work for each other to get out of this. That is how teams are successful."

Although Williams stressed that Wrexham are capable of competing with the best sides in the division, he admits there has been a lack of belief this season, evident in the fact that the Reds have won just two of their eight League Two games.

And Williams said that has to change, adding: "We can beat anyone in this league. We just have to have the belief that we can do it."

"I don't think it has been there, and that has been proved in our games. We just have not won as many as we would have liked.

"Two league wins out of eight is not good enough. We have to improve on that if we want to move up the table.

"You don't need to tell us that. Fans want us to win and we do too."

Poor defending cost Wrexham in midweek against Chesterfield as the Reds found themselves trailing 3-0 after just 15 minutes.

Wrexham had ended a run of six successive defeats by beating Lincoln in the previous outing, and Williams was disappointed the Reds could not capitalise on that by producing a better display against the Spireites.

"We gave away sloppy goals," said Williams. "Personally, I was playing at the back but it does not matter whose fault it was, it is a collective thing.

"We made a good start but when you give goals away like that you deserve to lose.

"We did not capitalise on the Lincoln win. We got beaten and were not good enough. That is gone now and you have to have to move on to the next game.

"Now we have to go to Accrington with the belief we can win. We will go again and give it our best shot."

And Williams wants to see a marked improvement against Accrington, who beat the Reds 5-0 in the corresponding fixture last season.

"We have to take it game by game," added Williams. "You are only as good as your last performance. Whether you won or lost your last game, you still have to improve on that in the next."
