BRIAN LITTLE is not getting too carried away after seeing Wrexham move out of the relegation zone.
Wrexham beat Bury 1-0 at Gigg Lane
last night – Little's first victory since taking over as manager – and the Reds
moved up to 20th in the League Two table.
Next up for Wrexham is another away match at Dagenham and Redbridge on Saturday,
who have themselves dropped into the relegation zone.
Although he remains cautious about Wrexham's position, Little is also mindful
that Wrexham could continue to climb the table: "Psychologically it is good but
we go to Dagenham and if we don't get anything there, we are certainly going to
come backwards pretty quickly again," he said today.
"You can't relax or switch off in this business. We will go into the game
feeling a little bit better, which is important, but mindful of the fact we have
to do this again.
"We can't go under that standard and set out our stall.
"We have to remember all the things we talk about day in, day out – and then we
have to produce it on the pitch. That does not always happen but this weekend it
becomes even more important for us.
"We have put ourselves in a position where we might be able to climb again, so
we will see what we can do."
Little added: "This is a step for us. That is pretty much a benchmark, a level
in terms of effort and determination that we don't want to fall underneath.
"If we can maintain that then good. There might be a few games that we can't,
but we are looking for that type of effort, commitment and team spirit, and
we'll have a chance then."
Eifion WIlliams hobbled off immediately after scoring the winning goal in the
31st minute, and although Bury came at Wrexham in the second half, the Reds
dealt with everything thrown at them.
And Little was delighted with the effort and discipline shown by his players to
ensure they held on for a deserved victory.
"To come here and get a result is great for us," said Little. "In the end, Bury
were having to be direct and throw big fellows in there to try and win the game,
and credit to them for that.
"But I thought we held out well and limited their chances. They had a couple of
little scrambles around the box which again I thought we dealt with great in
terms of wanting to defend.
"To have hung on is great. We said that 1-0 is probably the hardest scoreline to
win with so you have really got to believe in yourselves, and the last 10
minutes especially you have got to keep your discipline. You can't do silly
things and I think they have done well.
"We talked to everyone after the Rochdale game on Saturday saying that because
it was so defensive, we are trying to win games. There were periods we were
under pressure but I thought we expanded the game a little bit better, and
overall I feel we deserved to win."
