CAREY said he wanted Mike Williams to “maximise his potential” after the
defender’s starring role in Wales under-21s’ 3-1 victory over Malta.
Williams opened the scoring for Wales at the Racecourse on Wednesday, and gave a
solid performance at centre-half as Brian Flynn’s side strolled to a European
Championship win.
“I thought Mike did really well,” said Carey. “That didn’t surprise me because I
know what he’s capable of, but well done to him.”
The 20-year-old has been involved in just two games for Wrexham this season,
replacing Danny Williams in last Saturday’s 3-2 reverse at Macclesfield and also
playing in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy defeat to the same side.
“Mike broke into the team in the Macclesfield game in the Johnstone’s Paint
Trophy,” Carey added. “He got injured in that game and last Saturday was his
first game back, so we’re looking for him to push on now and maximise his
potential for us.”
Also involved in Wednesday’s U21 game was Dragons left-back Neil Taylor, while
16-year-old defender Kai Edwards also received a surprise call-up and was on the
bench.
Carey said: “Neil’s doing well – I want him to keep working hard and trying to
be the best player he can be. It’s also great that Kai was called up. He’s one
of a number of good youngsters coming through, which is very good for the future
of the club.”
