Good Evans above – it's Steve the striker

Steve EvansCOULD Wrexham supporters see Steve Evans staring in a striking role for Wrexham soon?

The Welsh international centre-back certainly seemed to enjoy himself in a 30-minute cameo role as a lone striker against Everton yesterday and Wrexham boss Brian Little today refused to rule out the prospect of using Evans as a target man when needs must in the future.

"In the last 10 minutes of a football match we have not got a big tall centre forward so we have tried something different out in a practice match," he said.

"Different players playing in different positions is part and parcel of training sessions for me because they might be asked to do it in a match one day."

Evans, who has scored two own goals in Wrexham's last two defeats, was part of a double substitution that saw himself and Neil Taylor replace Neil Roberts and Mark Proctor.

Wrexham then reverted from a 4-4-2 formation to a 4-5-1 and Evans operating as a lone target man.

"The whole point in arranging the match with Everton was so we could try different things and look at people in different roles," added Little.

"Some ideas stick in your mind and others disappear, but as a manager it is important to look at different things.

"If I have a thought about something then it's best to try it out because there is no point just chucking it into place for the first time during the final few minutes of a competitive game.

"I try to not give players things to do on a Saturday that I have not worked with them before.

"If you suddenly tell them that you want them to do this on a match day, and you have never practiced it in training it becomes a massive gamble.

"I try to practice things on the training ground that might happen on a match day."

Whether we ever see Evans operating as a striker on match day waits to be seen, but with sections of the training ground chanting 'Jan Koller Evans', he could fancy his chances.
