Wrexham get ready to sign new striker

By RICHARD WILLIAMS

Brian LittleWREXHAM were today set to secure the signing of a new striker – and another frontman could also arrive before the end of the week.

Manager Brian Little has made no secret of the fact that he wants to strengthen his attack after relegated Wrexham ended last season as the lowest scorers in League Two.

Little's overhaul of the Wrexham squad is already under way with 22 players told their futures lie away from The Racecourse.

That has left just two strikers in the squad – and one of those has been placed on the transfer list.

Little will definitely have the services of Marc Williams going into the new Blue Square Premier season while another frontman, Michael Proctor, is one of five players under contract placed on the transfer list.

But first team coach Martin Foyle is confident Wrexham can add to their strike options this week – hopefully starting today.

"We are looking to sign someone today and hopefully another by the end of the week, and both play up front," said Foyle today.

"One can play anywhere along the front four while the other is a more an out and out striker.

"We just need some strength and a bit of pace in attack. And obviously we have got to score more goals – that was probably why we were relegated last season.

"We are happy with them both and they have been impressed with us so it looks promising.

"Hopefully we are 95 per cent there, if not more, but until they actually sign, you can't get too excited."

Little has already made one new signing this season with midfielder Paul Carden, who spent most of last season on loan at Blue Square Premier outfit Cambridge United, who lost in the Wembley play-off final against Exeter City, joining from Accrington Stanley.

Wrexham have also been linked with another midfielder Tom Kearney, who has been at troubled Halifax Town – in administration and facing demotion of at least two steps down the football pyramid from the Blue Square Premier – for the last two seasons.

But as well as bolstering his strike force, Little also wants to bring in fresh faces in the centre-back position.

And although it remains uncertain whether Wales international Steve Evans will accept the offer of a new deal, Foyle said the search is on to add to the Reds' back line.

"I think we needed to improve in certain areas and we definitely need to look at the centre-back position and see what we can do there," added Foyle.

"You have got to make changes if you are relegated.

"That tells you something is not right and you have got to be ruthless – it is either them or us.

"It is a fresh start with a lot of pressure to take the club back to where it belongs."
