We used to have a few non contract players back in the 1980's, the likes of Steve Buxton and Nick Hencher to start with, I think it meant you could pay them appearance money and stuff like that but with no particular contract so they could move or you could terminate without any loss.
Anyone who remembers the Rothmans Yearbooks back then will remember that a few lower Division teams used to have players listed in the "Non Contract" section to beef up their very small squads.
