Perhaps we wanted to buy him now and Crew were happy to sell him to us to at least get something out of him before his contract allowed him to leave for free in 6 month. If Walker signs for us and does well his stock is only going to rise, costing Sam more or risk losing out on this player.
Only way to get him for certain would be to buy him now, which it seems he is doing.
