The essential weakness in Fans' Ownership is the fans

The view of a former WST Chairman on another discussion board. Is he right?

Without the fans a football club is nothing.

And we have a greater fanbase than many others at our level so no, he's wrong the fans are the bedrock and strongest link.

The weakness is in those in charge, running the ship and spending the money at a club that continually year after year underperforms whilst smaller clubs in terms of fanbase and resources pass us by.

Well there are only one group of fans to raise money from , but any number of potential private owners.
The problem is how many honest private owners ?

Its just the same, when the going gets tough fan numbers reduce and owners cant all handle the pressure. The answer is success on the pitch, which can lead to a fear of promotion and the possibility of a tough season and the pressures that brings to the club.

I would say thats the strength. The weakness is that those fans don't have big money to put into the club.

That adds weight to the initial argument. It's a fundamental misunderstanding that the clubs who outperform us are smaller in terms of resources when in a meaningful sense, i.e. money available for player wages, we are a mid-table performer with mid-table resources. Assuming that we must finish ahead of Boreham Wood because they've got 600 fans ignores the reality of how and why they compete. It's because of opinions like the one quoted that ensures that the club continues to spend money the way it does. But fans as a whole aren't ready to move away from this because the club must show "ambition" rather than common sense.

It's the biggest strength and biggest weaknesses. Depends how it's used.

If we where to do what Chester have done and argue amongst ourselves. Have board members coming and going left right and centre. Overspend, play shit, and allow attendances to drop a hell of a lot.

Well the playing shit part we are already there! Last seasons performance compared to the league position didn’t add up, that’s why we finished 10th in the league.

Agree. The requirement is for successful and hopefully attractive, entertaining football to keep everyone happy. We all want a return on our investment, after all!:)
