Resolution D - Bring Back Rockin Robin

Seeing as there are threads for most AGM resolutions, I thought I'd start one about the most important one of all!

I'm backing the proposers personally.
RESOLUTION D

Summary: To replace the current club mascot "Wrex the Dragon" with "Rockin' Robin"

Proposer: Mary Roberts, Adrian Roberts and Louise S Roberts

“The Society resolves that the Society Board be directed to replace the current club mascot "Wrex the Dragon" with "Rockin' Robin”.

Proposer’s background information:

Rockin' Robin was dismissed of his duties as the club's mascot in 2001, since then we have faced administration to relegation from the football league. Now we the fans have owned our club for some years and are looking for promotion and have enjoyed the games when Rockin' Robin came back for the odd game e.g. Barroween which brought large crowds to see his antics we would ask the membership to vote on his return as feel it would be beneficial to the club with the entertainment he brings.

Society Board’s Background Information:

Although they understand the sentiments behind this resolution and tempting as it may seem, the Board advises members not to vote in favour of it. Everyone who witnessed his antics looks back on the heyday of Rockin Robin with affection and to the years when the team’s nickname was “the Robins”. However, 17 years have now elapsed since the Club decided to adopt “the Dragons” as its nickname and to introduce Wrex the Dragon as its mascot. A name which reflects our Welsh identity and distinguishes us from other clubs. A generation of younger fans have known nothing else and the Junior Dragons is an important and growing part of the fanbase. Thousands of schoolchildren were entertained by Wrex at the recent Wales squad training day at the Racecourse. To alter things now would involve time and expense to rebrand this part of the Club’s image. Time and expense which is better spent elsewhere.

As this resolution directs the Board to act it requires a two thirds majority of those voting.
Resolution D

I never realised that our descent into the non league was caused by Rockin Robin being replaced by Wrex the Dragon!!!

Strikes me that this resolution is unfair as the people it applies to, children, aren't eligible to vote on it. And if Rockin robin comes back there would be a lot of wasted effort on my part teaching my two year old to roar like a dragon.

Re: Bring Back Rockin Robin

I think this sort of thing should be left to the younger fans and junior dragons to decide on. We could all vote for it based on nostalgia though.

I've a little one that likes Wrex and a young niece that loves him. I'm inclined to agree with the trust board in not wanting to incur costs of rebranding the junior Dragons.

Let's not alienate the kids of today and lose something that they know and identify with.

Give it 17 years and someone could propose a wrex return haha.

Re: Bring Back Rockin Robin

Why does the Board have to advise members, why not just let people vote?

As for 'the Dragons' distinguishing us from other clubs, to me it is the most default welsh thing possible.

From the 2001 press release ( Latest News ) Commercial Manager Christian Smith, who has spearheaded the change ... said "While tradition and traditional values should never be totally overlooked, Wrexham Football Club is entering a period in its history when changes need to happen with progress both on and off the field of play."

How did that decade go in the end?

Rob 4th June 2018 09.20:08

Re: Bring Back Rockin Robin

Also - 2013 the club moved from Wrexham FC to Wrexham AFC

http://wst.org.uk/www3/index.php/documents/wst-agm-information/wst-agm-2013/168-2013-agm-pack/file page 13.

No mention of time and expense better spent elsewhere then, and Board took a 'neutral position'.

Bearing in mind that was a change on the badge as well etc etc

So Wrexham's decline is because we changed our nickname and in no way related to Pryce Griffiths rejecting Geoff Farrells consortium but instead eventually selling out to Guttterman?

I’m voting in favour of the resolution.
It was a criminal act to adopt the Dragon in the first place.

Yes, let's spend time and money that we don't have on rebranding for no other reason than nostalgia.

The fact that grown men and women even care about a mascot is beyond me. The kids love Wrex and the Junior Dragons goes a long way to securing a fan base for the future.

For the sake of the kids, leave Wrex be.

Won't somebody think of the children!! ;)

I will vote NO! as the presenter of the DRAGONheart Radio Show, I am a bit biased;)

I really don't think ROBINheart Radio Show has the same ring to it!!:toilet:

Re: Resolution D - Bring Back Rockin Robin

Rockin Robin was great, but the kids of today will be used to Wrex and not really know who Rockin Robin is - plus it will involve additional costs and time to rebrand the junior Dragons etc., so it's a no from me.

The motion is about the mascot, not a rebrand?

Generic mascots are quite cheap it seems https://www.mascotcostumes.co.uk/Red-Dragon-Mascot-Costume

"as you would expect, this costume is very popular with our customers in Wales" :D

( Also, https://www.mascotcostumes.co.uk/Walrus-Mascot-Costume just for the phrase 'luxury Walrus mascot' !)

me too.

We are the Robins, and I think the change in mascot should logically lead to an official change back to our real nickname.

Of course, but the mascot is there for the kids - so the Junior Dragons, for example, would really have to be rebranded, as would various merchandise. The actual costume costs are neither here nor there.

I can't remember the figure paid for the actual wtex costume and it's only 3years old cos other one stank.

Who owns the rockin robin suit? I could be wrong but I'm sure it was said after the anniversary game that the original suit wouldn't be used again? Due to wear and tear?

So would we be voting for a new rockin robin? New suit wouldn't be the same either?

If we just tell the kids that Wrex has gone to the same place as their goldfish it will be fine, no-one's advocating hanging him in public, although I think we could do it in private to celebrate vanquishing the cursed thing.
We are the Robins ffs not a generic Welsh Dragon!
There's nothing more generic than sharing a nickname with Bristol City, Cheltenham and about a million other clubs. Plus at least the dragon is related to Wales; Robins came in after being named after a director from Yorkshire. To do a similar thing now would lead to Spencer Harris changing the club's nickname to the Cornflakes, and having a man dressed as a Rice Krispie walking round the pitch.

I'm a little bit annoyed at this, it makes the whole process a joke. And it makes it look like there are people out there who really believe that putting on the Robin costume will take over the spirit of the man who wears it, and before you know it riding a bike around the pitch will be irresistible to the wearer. flip me.

A mutant mascot! That's awesome.

We could be called the hybrids. Or inbreds.

If not, let's get them on Jeremy Kyle. Rockin disappeared leaving wife and kid. Wrex was there to comfort her, things got a bit steamy. Tada.. Our new mascot, the love child of Tina Turfit and Wrex The Dragon.
Rockin Robin too old to fight, Rockin Robinson (next in line to throne) is on drink and drugs. Being thrust into limelight at young age messed him up.

I have never accepted losing The Robins in favour of a generic Dragons. The vote that was taken by a previous Commercial Manager was so sneaky - high summer when most fans were on holiday.
The Robins nickname was relevant to previous Wrexham history and should stay/re instated. What next for our fundamentalist fringe? Owain Glyndwr United!

Only because he's inducted them into his sick, satanic cult. I heard it's Alex Hamilton in that suit. He sabotaged us at Wembley by untying Ormerod's shoelaces and putting lead in Artell's boots.
