Re: How do we score more goals over xmas ?

People joked about the froth when we signed Fondop, Pyke and Beavon, there are simply no goals in those players. Our biggest hope was Maguire Drew but unfortunately he’s been pretty poor. It was pretty clear we hadn’t spent hardly anything for our strikers, and the proof is in the pudding and the title of this thread just says it all.

Make no mistake about this, we dropped two points yesterday because of the dog shit strikers we have, it’s cost us already, but somehow we’re still in the hunt. We can’t afford many games like yesterday again, so failure to sign quality in January will just kills us again.

No excuses, sign decent forwards please, the ones who’ve shown the ability to find the back of the net please, yes they cost more than most players because they win games, like yesterday for you, like Bonne did at our place.

And yet, Fondop started really well with early goals - JMD did well and looked dangerous and was good on set pieces with free kicks and corners - Beavon & Pyke have looked good in flashes but nobody is doing it to a high standard over a period of time.
This is a mirror of previous recent seasons - strikers come in, look promising and then quickly fade.
Is it the way we set up ? does their confidence get kicked out of them behind the scenes and on the training ground ?
Mourinho leaves Manchester United and suddenly those in the squad who were excluded are brought back in, the formation changes and a supposedly dead, boring defensive team is brought back to life and scores 5 goals away from home in a fantastic attacking performance.

So, is it a matter of getting more out of what we already have here - could they now do better under GB's leadership ?

JMD has been injured for some weeks and returned to the bench yesterday.
Fondop is the most physical threat but seems out of favour.
Pyke still out injured for the Christmas period ?

There will be so much expectation on Tollit to be our saviour - a player who some will see as the player who will bring our team alive - but lets not forget he has been out injured for long periods and lacks game time / match fitness - by the rule of averages I doubt he will hit the ground running, he will need a few games under his belt to get properly into his stride unless a miracle happens, and introducing him over the neck 3 games against top of the table opposition will be far from easy.

JMD and Fondop will have to perform miracles to improve under Barrow when neither of them can get on the pitch in a game where our forwards couldn't hit a barn door.

I don't get this 433 formation people go on about, there's only a loan striker and the others join in when appropriate. I like to see two up top playing on the centre backs shoulders two wingers pumping balls in. But that's to old fashion and to easy, people like numbers.

Abandon the "Make sure we don't lose" attitude.

Change the mind set for the greater good, perhaps ?

Out of the next 3 games some of us would rejoice if we drew all 3 - equals 3 points.

Win 1, lose 1 and draw 1 - equals 4 points
Lose 1 and win 2 - equals 6 points.
Anyway, think you get where I am going with this - Gateshead are only 5 points behind us for all our huffing & puffing with the best defensive record in the league but if we went a bit more gung ho we might lose a few more but win more too - if it gives us a better points total and entertains us is it such a bad thing ?

Lost count of how many games we have drawn 0 - 0 or failed to score in a game - we are certainly starved of goals. One game all season and that was only for the first 45 minutes v Ebbsfleet where we looked fantastic in the last third and scored 4 - even went on to lose the second half 1 - 0.

Against Salford might well only have one opportunity to score or might need a moment of magic so would go with Tolitt-Grant-JMD with Beavon & Fondop second half subs. Still cannot get my head around not bringing on JMD or Fondop when wanting a goal Saturday but going for the prolific Deverdics.

Re: How do we score more goals over xmas ?

I would like to see the players shooting from distance a lot more. They seem to try and walk it in like Arsenal used to under Wenger. I'd prefer it if we played 4-4-2.

I'd say give the fringe players (Holroyd, Fondop, JMD, Deverdics) a few more minutes on the pitch and if they are still not up to it then loan them out in January.

As soon as the transfer window opens, I'd like to see a striker or 2 signed. We don't need any more wingers/ attacking midfielders.
