I agree that the Torquay game was as you put it a 'circus' as was the WST led town walkabout - but it attracted the media - and I suppose promoted the club.

As one wag put it to me - the whole week was rather Stephanie Booth ish. with funds -even down the the use of a national anthem.

If I remember correctly it was a notional fee for the club and the £2m was to paid towards running the club. A gesture, if you will, a bit like the scene in the Metallica documentary Some Kind of Monster where the band made a point of saying to the new bass player Rob Trujillo that they were giving him a $1m for joining the band. They painted as showing their commitment, could be seen as grandstanding.
Tbf the the PR generated by having the ownership we do must have made an exponential impact. Long may it continue
