I could see Roberts covering at Centre Back for 20 minutes in an emergency, but putting him there at the start of the game, is just one gamble too far.

Poor in the air, not strong enough. Hurst is strong and good in the air. He would make a better centre back. He has put in far better crosses than Roberts has so far and has had at least 2 shots more on target from distance. His balls down the line are intothe right areas, not aimless. Usually dropping just over the opposing full back. That's not a hoof. He has shown more attacking prowess than Roberts and our up turn in form directly coincided with him replacing Roberts

Either would be fine next to Pearson, both would probably struggle next to Manny....that's why Pearson and Smith just work so well together.
