As a regular visitor to the Algarve I offer my personal review and tips, for those of you interested:
Nandos chicken piri-piri is a very poor impersonator of the genuine article available in many good Portuguese restaurants, particularly in the small town of Guia, near Albufeira, or in the hills around Monchique. For those with bigger budgets or wanting a corden bleu experience, there excellent higher end restaurants around Almancil, about 2Ks inland from the resort. Obviously there are plenty of good fish restaurants around, but generally the further away from the Vilamoura resort you go, the better, more authentic and less expensive the food will be. Even some of the smaller cafes and Pastelarias serve excellent food. I'm not wishing to denegrate Vilamoura in any way, as it is, as has been pointed out, a very nice compact resort with lots of choice and nightlife, but the restaurants tend to be very similar in their offerings. Superboc is the draught beer of the masses, similar to Carling here, but if you can find a bar serving draft Crystal, Tagus or Sagres, I would go for that as I find it less gassy and "chemically" than Superboc. If you are a wine drinker, ask if they serve wine by the "Jarro". This is basically house draft wine and will be cheaper and as good as the bottles on the wine list. Just back, if your thinking of goin you should have a great time, the best places are around the marina, beers range from 3.50-5.00 euros and loads of places to eat, funny thing is there must be 5 or 6 Irish bars with O'Neils being the best. oh and its roasting there at the minute.
