It was October 1964. If only we had a Ernie or a Sammy Mac now. I'm not sure, but was Ernie part of the deal when Wyn Davies went.
Ernie Pythian was part pf the deal taking Wyn Davies to Bolton. Last game plated by Wyn was an away game at Southport. The following Monday he was a Bolton player. He went on to Newcastle where he became the crowds favourite striker affectionately called "The Mighty Wyn". Good old days when Wrexham where probably at their peak in playing performance.

Fortunately.. I hadn't grown tall enough yet, to see half the goals going in, at that, even then, crappy Sealand Road..
There are some talented and great players in that listing but one that was missing from Ken Barnes side was a winger called Ronnie Barnes.

Knowles is blast from the very distant past. Knowles, Whitelys and Roger & Jackson's department store were the places that sold soccer stuff in my childhood. Whitly's was the only one remaining when I left Wrexham.

The premises on the corner will always be Whitley's to me. I can picture the staff working there all those years ago. T'was always a highlight as a kid going there at the start of each season to get my Gola boots.

I remember Gola boots and 'orange Wembley Trophy' plastic footballs that rarely lasted the summer holiday's as they would get punctured when kicked into a hedge.

Back in the early 1970's world cup winner Alan Ball who was with Everton suddenly appeared with revolutionary 'all white boots' - still recall it caused quite a stir at the time as it was so different.

In addition to football boots I also used to buy my Subbuteo players and accessories from Whitleys

Ron Barnes,Alan Fox and the great Kevin Keelan had,by this time, been sold on.
The team shown in this article, whilst still having a few good players, was well on the wain.
The following season saw us finish in bottom (92nd) place and seeking re election.
