Default New manager to have final say on retained list

Hopefully this helps put some minds at ease.

New Wrexham AFC manager will have final say on retained list | The Leader

ANDY DAVIES revealed Wrexham's new manager will have the final say on the retained list.

Dean Keates left to take charge of hometown club Walsall in March and Davies, his right-hand man, was appointed Reds' boss until the end of the season.

Eight players, including captain Shaun Pearson, centre-back Manny Smith and midfielder Sam Wedgbury, are under contract for the 2018-19 campaign but the likes of goalkeeper Chris Dunn and top scorer Chris Holroyd will be free agents in the summer.

Although Davies will provide his views on what players should be offered new deals, the incoming manager will have the final say.

"The new manager, whoever that may be coming in, it is important that he has a say on the lads out of contract," said Davies.

"Ultimately he is going to be the manager next season, it won't be me.

"Myself, Carl Darlington and the other staff can help and give opinions on players.

"We know the players, we will have an opinion and say open and honestly what we think but it is important that the new manager has that say.

"He is inheriting a group of players, ones in contract and out of contract, so that decision should lie with the new manager."

Davies ruled himself out of the running to be Wrexham manager on a permanent basis but will be at the helm when the Reds face AFC Fylde at The Racecourse on Saturday.

"It won't be me," said Davies.

"When Dean left, myself and the rest of the staff got asked to take the team forward till the end of the season with me being manager, and that hasn't changed.

"That will still be the case for the final game of the season and after that, it will be a new manager coming in.

"That process is underway and the club are looking at that."

The recruitment process to appoint a new manager has been on-going and Davies added: "They have kept us in the loop on the process.

"It is a club decision in terms of what they decide to do and who that person is going to be."

Davies has been linked with a move to Walsall to link up with Keates once again and be part of his back-room staff.

When asked what the future holds for him, Davies said: "It was get to the end of the season and see where we are at.

"That was the job we got asked to do like everybody else and then we see who comes in and what their plans are going forward for next season."

Wrexham could only be playing for pride against Fylde on the final day of the season.

A six game winless run has seen the promotion challenge fade and Wrexham, beaten 1-0 at Leyton Orient on Saturday, are currently 10th in the National League, one point behind Dover who occupy the final play-off spot.

But Ebbsfleet United and Bromley would both climb into the top seven if they win their games in hand tonight.

"We haven't done ourselves any favours on Saturday and previous games so it is out of our hands and seeing what the other results are leading into the weekend," said Davies.
